A beloved classic returns in stunning cinematic form. The highly anticipated The Rose of Versailles theatrical anime, based on Riyoko Ikeda’s iconic manga, will begin exclusive global streaming on Netflix starting April 30.

First serialized in 1972 in Weekly Margaret (Shueisha), The Rose of Versailles captured hearts with its vivid portrayal of love, ambition, and identity amid the turbulence of Revolutionary France. With over 20 million copies sold to date, the series has long been a cornerstone of shojo manga, inspiring a cultural phenomenon that spanned Takarazuka stage productions, television anime, and beyond. Now, over 50 years since its debut, the saga returns as a brand-new feature-length anime film.

Premiering in Japanese theaters on January 31, this cinematic adaptation breathes fresh life into the story of Oscar François de Jarjayes — the noblewoman raised as a man to serve the royal guard — and her fateful entanglement with Queen Marie Antoinette, the French commoner André Grandier, and the dashing Count Hans Axel von Fersen. Set in the splendor of 18th-century Versailles, the film explores their intertwined destinies as France edges toward revolution.

The film boasts an all-star creative team: directed by Ai Yoshimura (Blue Spring Ride, Cheer Boys!!), scripted by Tomoko Konparu (Kimi ni Todoke, Uta no☆Prince-sama♪), with character designs by Mariko Oka (First Love Monster, Nura: Rise of the Yokai Clan). Music is helmed by acclaimed composers Hiroyuki Sawano (Attack on Titan) and KOHTA YAMAMOTO (The Grand Family), while MAPPA (Jujutsu Kaisen, In This Corner of the World) brings the animation to life.

The stellar voice cast includes:

  • Miyuki Sawashiro as Oscar François de Jarjayes

Narration is provided by acclaimed actress Hitomi Kuroki, a devoted fan of the series since her Takarazuka days.

Adding to the grandeur, the theme song “Versailles -ベルサイユ-” is performed by Ayaka, who penned the piece specifically for the film. Her powerful vocals and sweeping melodies underscore the epic emotions of the story.

With enduring themes and a timeless cast of characters, The Rose of Versailles continues to captivate new generations. This new theatrical version invites global audiences to once again witness the beauty and tragedy of Oscar and her world — now in breathtaking animation, and available worldwide on Netflix.
